The most ancient use of the term terra sigillata refers to a type of medicinal clay that originated from the island of Lemnos in Greece. This clay has been used in many epochs, ranging from primitive times to the present day. Widespread use for therapeutical purposes spread from the Middle East to the Mediterranean as a result of the expansion of the Roman Empire.
